UK research links hard water areas with drier, more easily irritated skin and, in early infancy, higher eczema risk, likely because hard water leaves more soap residue that raises skin moisture loss. Does hard water actually dry out your skin?
Many people in hard water parts of the UK notice the same thing. Skin feels tight, squeaky and dry within minutes of showering, and the effect seems worse than it did on holiday in a soft water region. That everyday experience lines up with what researchers have measured, though the science is more careful than most marketing suggests.
Hard water is water high in dissolved minerals, mainly calcium carbonate. Most of England, especially the South and East, sits in medium to hard water zones. What does the research really show?
The most cited UK finding comes from a 2016 study led by Perkin and Flohr at King's College London, using data from around 1,300 three month old infants across the UK. Babies living in hard water areas had an up to 87 percent higher risk of eczema at three months of age, and this association held independent of the water's chlorine content. Importantly, an association is not proof of cause. The authors were explicit that it was not yet clear whether calcium carbonate harms the skin barrier directly or whether other factors linked to hard water are responsible.
A 2021 systematic review and meta analysis by Jabbar-Lopez and colleagues in Clinical and Experimental Allergy pooled seven observational studies covering more than 385,000 people. It found a positive association between harder water and developing atopic eczema, with a pooled odds ratio of about 1.28. The review graded the certainty of that association as very low, meaning the link is real in the data but far from settled.
So the honest summary is this. Living in a hard water area is associated with a modestly higher chance of eczema in early life and with skin that feels drier. It is a signal worth taking seriously, not a proven cause you can rely on.
Why would hard water irritate skin? The mechanism
The most convincing mechanism comes from a 2018 study by Danby, Cork and colleagues at Sheffield and King's, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. When skin was washed with hard water, it left significantly more surfactant residue behind, specifically the detergent sodium lauryl sulfate found in many cleansers.
That leftover residue matters. In the study, higher surfactant deposits raised transepidermal water loss, which is the rate at which water escapes through the skin, and increased irritation. The effect was strongest in people carrying filaggrin gene mutations, a known genetic weakness in the skin barrier. In simple terms, hard water can make your soap harder to rinse off, and the residue left behind draws moisture out and provokes irritation.
In that laboratory study, softening the water by ion exchange reduced the surfactant residue. That points to the residue as the culprit, but it is a controlled experiment about barrier measurements, not evidence that softening treats a skin condition in daily life.

If hard water is the problem, does softening fix it?
This is where honesty matters most. The Softened Water Eczema Trial, known as SWET, was a UK randomised controlled trial of 336 children published in PLOS Medicine. Installing a whole house ion exchange water softener produced no meaningful improvement in eczema severity compared with usual care over twelve weeks.
The 2021 meta analysis reached the same conclusion for established eczema, grading the water softener trial evidence as moderate certainty with no significant benefit. In other words, once eczema is present, making your water softer has not been shown to treat it.
This creates a genuine and important distinction. Hard water is associated with the onset of drier, more reactive skin and early eczema risk, but softening is not a proven treatment for skin that is already affected. Anyone claiming a device cures or treats eczema is going beyond the evidence.
Where does chlorine fit in, and what genuinely helps?
UK tap water is disinfected with chlorine to keep it safe, and that is a good thing. Chlorine is a recognised skin and eye irritant at higher concentrations, such as in swimming pools, and can contribute to that dry, tight feeling after washing. At the same time, the honest position is that the strongest UK evidence points at water hardness and surfactant residue rather than tap water chlorine. In the Perkin infant study the eczema link was independent of chlorine, and the Danby study did not find a clear chlorine effect on the skin barrier.
What genuinely helps day to day is practical and well supported. Rinse cleanser off thoroughly so less residue is left on the skin. Use gentle, fragrance free wash products and use less of them. Keep showers shorter and cooler, since hot water and long exposure worsen dryness. Moisturise within a few minutes of getting out to lock in water while skin is still damp.
A shower filter fits into this picture as one small step. Carbon based shower filters can reduce chlorine and its byproducts in the water hitting your skin, which some people find leaves skin feeling less stripped. Be clear on the limits though. A shower filter does not remove calcium carbonate, so it does not change your water's hardness, and it is not a medical device or a fix for eczema.
