Does hard water really make colour fade faster?

In hard water areas the answer is usually yes, and the reason is chemistry rather than bad luck. Hard water carries dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, and sometimes trace metals such as copper and iron picked up from pipes and supply. As the water evaporates and you wash day after day, these minerals settle onto the hair surface as a fine film, the same way scale forms on a kettle or a shower screen.

That film sits on the cuticle, the outer layer of overlapping scales that gives hair its shine. A smooth cuticle reflects light evenly, so colour looks glossy and true. Once a mineral layer coats the surface, light scatters instead, and salon colour can start to look flat, dull or slightly muddy well before your next appointment.

Around 60 percent of UK homes, roughly 17 million households, sit in hard or very hard water areas, with much of London, the Home Counties and East Anglia above 200 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre. So for a large share of the country, this is the everyday water that colour treated hair is washed in.

How do calcium, copper and iron dull and shift tone?

Calcium and magnesium are the classic hardness minerals. They do not change your dye formula, but as they build up on the shaft they add a dulling veil and can make hair feel rough, coated and harder to rinse clean. Product seems to sit on top rather than absorb, and shine drops.

Trace metals are where tone actually shifts. Copper, which can enter water from plumbing or from pool treatments, is the metal behind the classic green cast in blonde and lightened hair. Iron tends to pull lighter shades warmer and can leave brunettes looking dull or slightly brassy. Because these metals bind to the hair protein, the effect can be stubborn and builds gradually.

Colour treated and lightened hair is especially exposed. Bleaching and permanent colour lift the cuticle and leave the hair more porous, so the raised scales act almost like velcro for minerals and metals. The more porous the hair, the more readily deposits cling on and the faster tone drifts.

What does chlorine do to coloured hair?

Most UK tap water is disinfected with a small amount of chlorine, and pool water carries far more. Chlorine is an oxidiser, meaning it drives reactions that remove electrons from other molecules. On hair, that oxidising action lifts the cuticle, strips some of the natural surface lipids and raises porosity, which is why chlorine exposed hair can feel dry and straw like.

Oxidation can also work directly on colour. It can nudge warm pigments to show through as brassiness and can encourage dye molecules to leave a more open cuticle, so tone looks faded sooner. Importantly, the notorious green tint from swimming is not chlorine itself but copper in the water. Chlorine oxidises that copper into compounds that bind tightly to the shaft, and the damage it does to the cuticle makes hair absorb those copper ions even more readily.

So chlorine and hard water minerals are not separate problems. Chlorine opens and roughens the surface, and that primes the hair to hold on to the very minerals and metals that dull and shift your colour.

Can filtering the shower help my colour look better?

Reducing how much chlorine and mineral residue reaches your hair addresses the surface film at the source, so the benefit shows up as feel and appearance. Hair that is washed in water with less chlorine and less mineral deposit tends to feel smoother and cleaner, and a smoother cuticle simply reflects light better, so colour can look truer and stay looking fresher between salon visits.

It is worth being precise about what this does and does not do. A shower filter does not change the hardness rating of your water, and reducing residue will not lock, repair or restore your colour. What it changes is how much buildup lands on the hair each wash. Less buildup means less of the dulling veil and less of the metal loading that shifts tone, which is why many people describe better shine and slower looking fade.

Think of it as protecting the appearance of your investment rather than a treatment. Colour still fades over time as it naturally does, but a cleaner wash environment helps it look its best for as long as possible.

How to protect colour treated hair

  • Use a clarifying or chelating wash occasionally to lift mineral and metal buildup, then follow with deep conditioning
  • Filter your shower to reduce the chlorine and mineral residue reaching your hair each wash
  • Rinse and wash in cooler water, since hot water opens the cuticle and lets more colour escape
  • Choose colour safe, sulphate free shampoo and space out washes to slow fade
  • Wet your hair with clean water before swimming so it soaks up less pool water, and rinse straight after
  • Wait a couple of days after colouring before heavy washing or swimming so the cuticle can settle

Frequently asked questions

Does a shower filter soften my water?

No. A shower filter does not soften water or change its hardness rating. It reduces how much chlorine and mineral residue reaches your hair and skin, which is why hair can feel smoother and colour can look fresher, but the water is still the same hardness.

Why does my blonde look slightly green or ashy?

That cast usually comes from copper in the water rather than chlorine. Chlorine oxidises copper into compounds that bind to the shaft, and lightened, porous hair holds them most readily. A chelating or clarifying treatment is designed to lift metal deposits.

Will reducing minerals restore my faded colour?

No. Reducing chlorine and mineral residue cannot restore, repair or lock in colour. It lowers the buildup that dulls shine and shifts tone, so remaining colour can look truer and fresher, but faded pigment only comes back with a fresh colour service.

Is hard water bad for my health?

The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate does not set a hardness limit because hardness is not considered a direct health risk. The issues discussed here are about the look and feel of hair and about limescale on surfaces, not safety.

How often should I clarify colour treated hair?

There is no single rule, but many people in hard water areas find roughly once a week to once a fortnight helps manage buildup without overdoing it. Always follow a clarifying or chelating wash with conditioner, since it can leave hair feeling dry.

Does cooler water actually make a difference?

It can help. Hot water encourages the cuticle to lift, which lets more colour rinse away and lets more residue settle. A cooler final rinse helps the cuticle lie flatter, so hair reflects light better and colour tends to look fresher.
