Is UK Water Bad for Your Skin and Hair? What the Science Says

The short answer. UK tap water is safe to drink, but across the roughly 60% of the country with hard water it can leave skin feeling tight and hair looking dull. The dissolved minerals that make water hard, along with the chlorine used to keep it clean, strip the skin's natural oils and leave residue on hair. A shower filter does not soften your water, but it can reduce chlorine and the mineral residue left on your skin and hair, so showers feel gentler.

If your skin feels tight the moment you step out of the shower, or your hair looks flat and behaves differently when you travel, the cause may have less to do with your routine than with what comes out of the tap. Water quality varies enormously across the UK, and in much of the country it is measurably hard. Here is what that means, what the research actually shows, and what a shower filter can and cannot change.

How much of the UK has hard water?

Around 60% of the UK lives in a hard or very hard water area, concentrated across the south and east of England. London, the Home Counties, the South East, East Anglia and the East Midlands sit at the harder end, while most of Scotland, Wales, the North West and the South West enjoy soft water.

The pattern follows the geology. Rain that falls on chalk and limestone dissolves the calcium and magnesium carbonate in the rock, and carries those minerals through to your tap. Regions built on granite and other less soluble rock keep their water soft.

What makes water hard, and how hard is UK water?

Hard water is simply water with a high level of dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured in milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate (mg/L CaCO₃). The Drinking Water Inspectorate, the UK regulator, classifies it on a simple scale.

To put that in context, according to AQUERIE's UK Water Report data, Thames Water, which supplies most of Greater London, typically delivers water around 300 mg/L CaCO₃, which sits in the very hard band. Anglian Water, across East Anglia and the East Midlands, classifies all of its supply as hard to very hard. That makes London and the South East among the hardest water regions supplied to any major population in Europe.

How does hard water affect your skin?

Hard water is linked to drier, more easily irritated skin, and UK research associates it with a higher risk of eczema in early life. The evidence is associative rather than proof of cause, but the pattern is consistent and there is a plausible mechanism behind it.

A King's College London study of 1,303 UK infants found that living in a hard water area was associated with an up to 87% higher chance of eczema at three months of age, independent of chlorine. A later mechanistic experiment at the University of Sheffield and King's College London showed how this might happen: washing skin in hard water left more surfactant residue behind (the cleansing agents in soap and shower gel), which raised transepidermal water loss, the rate at which skin loses moisture, and increased irritation. The effect was strongest in people with a weakened skin barrier.

It is worth being honest about the limits of this research. A 2021 systematic review found a positive association between harder water and eczema developing in childhood, but rated the certainty as low, and two trials found that installing a whole-house water softener did not significantly improve eczema that was already established. In other words, hard water appears to be one contributing factor among several, not a single cause, and softening the water is not a treatment. What most people notice day to day is simpler: skin that feels tighter and drier after showering.

What does chlorine in tap water do to your skin?

Chlorine keeps tap water safe to drink, but it is drying to skin and hair. UK water companies are legally required to keep a small residual of chlorine in the network to stop bacteria growing on the way to your tap, which is one of the great public health achievements of the last century.

Levels at the tap are low, typically around 0.1 to 0.5 mg/L, well within the regulatory limit. That is safe to drink. On skin and hair, however, chlorine is an oxidiser that reacts with the natural oils on the surface of the skin, and stripping those oils raises moisture loss and can leave skin feeling tight or itchy, the same effect swimmers know well after a chlorinated pool.

How does hard water affect your hair?

Hard water leaves a mineral film on hair that makes it feel rougher, look duller, and fade colour faster. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the hair shaft and build up over time, which is why hair can feel different when you move between soft and hard water areas.

The same minerals react with shampoo, which is why lather is harder to work up in hard water and why more residue is left behind. For colour-treated hair, the mineral layer and the oxidising effect of chlorine can dull tone and speed up fade between salon visits. The strongest, most defensible framing here is feel and appearance rather than damage: softer-feeling, smoother, longer-lasting colour, not a cure for hair loss, which the evidence does not support.

Is hard water actually bad for you to drink?

No. Hard water is safe to drink, and the minerals in it are the same dietary calcium and magnesium found in food. The World Health Organization has found no convincing evidence that hard water harms health, and UK regulators treat hardness as a practical and aesthetic issue rather than a health standard.

The real day-to-day cost of hard water is buildup and feel: limescale on the kettle, taps and shower head, soap that will not lather, and that film left on skin and hair. Limescale is calcium carbonate coming out of the water, especially when it is heated.
