Hard water stains are chalky mineral deposits, mainly calcium carbonate, left behind when hard water dries on a surface. In hard water areas the water carries more dissolved calcium and magnesium, so glass, taps and showerheads spot faster. Mild acids remove them and regular drying prevents them.

What are hard water stains and limescale?

Hard water stains are the cloudy white or grey marks left behind after hard water sits or dries on a surface. Hard water carries dissolved minerals, chiefly calcium and magnesium, that it picked up while flowing through rock such as chalk and limestone. When a droplet evaporates, the water leaves but the minerals cannot, so they stay on the surface as a thin crust.

That crust is mostly calcium carbonate, the same compound found in chalk and limestone. When it builds up in layers over time, especially on taps and inside kettles, it is usually called limescale. In showers you often see a second problem mixed in: soap scum. This forms when the calcium and magnesium in hard water react with soap and leave a sticky film that clings to glass and tiles alongside the mineral deposit.

Two things are worth being clear about. The stain is a mineral deposit sitting on top of a surface, not damage to the surface itself, so in most cases it can be removed. And the deposit does not appear because a surface is dirty in the usual sense. It appears because the water that touched it was hard.

Where do hard water stains show up?

Stains appear wherever hard water repeatedly wets a surface and then dries. In the bathroom the usual suspects are glass shower screens, chrome taps and mixers, showerheads, tiles and grout, and around plugholes. Anywhere water splashes and is left to dry on its own tends to collect spots.

Heat speeds the whole process up, because warming hard water pushes carbon dioxide out and encourages calcium carbonate to drop out of solution. That is why kettles, hot taps, boilers and heating elements scale up faster than cold surfaces, and why showerhead nozzles slowly clog. Water spots on glass and taps are the visible early stage of the same deposit that later becomes thick limescale on a kettle element.

Why do some areas get hard water stains faster?

It comes down to geology. Where rain falls on chalk and limestone, which are made largely of calcium carbonate, the slightly acidic rainwater dissolves the rock and loads the groundwater with calcium and magnesium before it ever reaches a tap. Much of southern and eastern England, including London, the Home Counties and East Anglia, draws water from these aquifers, so the supply is naturally hard or very hard.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate classes water above 200 mg per litre of calcium carbonate as hard, and above 300 mg per litre as very hard. Supplies in parts of the south east regularly sit in the 250 to 350 mg per litre range. More dissolved mineral in the water means more mineral left behind every time a drop dries, so hard water areas see stains build faster and return sooner after cleaning. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the north west tend to have softer water and far fewer problems.

How do you remove hard water stains safely?

Because the deposit is calcium carbonate, a mild acid dissolves it. The two common household options are white vinegar, which contains acetic acid, and citric acid powder dissolved in warm water. Both react with the mineral and lift it off. A typical citric acid mix is about one tablespoon of powder in 500 ml of warm water, left to sit for 15 to 30 minutes so it can work before you wipe and rinse.

Keep the method gentle and patient rather than abrasive. Let the acid dwell, then wipe with a soft cloth and rinse thoroughly with clean water so no residue is left. For a scaled kettle, a half water and half white vinegar solution left to stand, then boiled and rinsed well, is a well known approach. Do not scrub hard deposits with metal scourers, which can scratch chrome and glass.

Some surfaces must be protected. Never use vinegar, citric acid or any acidic cleaner on natural stone such as marble, granite, travertine or limestone. These stones are themselves calcium carbonate, so the acid etches and dulls them permanently. Be cautious on cement based grout, where repeated acid use can weaken it, and avoid leaving acid on rubber seals for long periods. Always test any cleaner on a small hidden area first, and never mix acidic cleaners with bleach.

Can a shower filter stop hard water stains?

This is where honesty matters. A shower filter with scale control media can help reduce mineral buildup on your skin, your hair and the showerhead itself, which many people in hard water areas notice as a gentler feel and a cleaner head. That is a real and useful benefit at the point where you shower.

What a shower filter does not do is change the hardness of the water flowing to the rest of your home. It does not remove hardness from the water, so it cannot stop calcium carbonate deposits forming on taps, tiles, glass screens, kettles or anywhere else the mains supply reaches. It is not a whole house solution and it does not soften your water.

  • Dry glass screens, taps and tiles after use with a squeegee or microfibre cloth so water cannot evaporate and leave minerals behind
  • Wipe taps and mixers dry after washing up or brushing teeth, since standing droplets are where spots start
  • Clean little and often with a mild acid such as diluted white vinegar or citric acid before deposits thicken into limescale
  • Descale your kettle and showerhead regularly, as heat makes these scale up fastest
  • Keep the bathroom ventilated to speed drying and reduce standing moisture
  • Never use acidic cleaners on marble, granite or other natural stone, and test any product on a hidden area first
  • Consider a shower filter to reduce buildup on skin, hair and the showerhead, and an ion exchange softener to cut hardness across the whole home
